Personal Experiences of Participants
- Shruti says
“Running down the streets of Delhi. As part of a forty member group. All of us dressed in bright yellow T-shirts. Screaming for our right to feel safe in our city. Dancing to peppy Bollywood numbers and stopping by for ice cream along the way. This was all a part of the experience that I will remember forever as the Safe Delhi Run” - Surabhi says
“I had not participated in a sports event since I was fourteen and the marathon brought back the sheer joy of being on the ‘field’. People of all ages and sizes were walking or running, and for many of us it was a platform to voice our concerns. I ran/ walked with JAGORI’s Safe Delhi group and our intention was to draw people’s attention towards the issue of safety of women in public spaces. I must confess that after a while my concern was to complete the seven kilometers – which I did driven primarily by the palpable spirit around me. It was one of the most positive experiences in a long time – because I covered the distance, enjoyed it, and it was my way of saying, ‘I care’.” - Seema says
“What I liked the most about participating in the half marathon was the idea of ‘running on road’, which was a new experience for me. Running on road without being leered at and without having vulgar comments passed at me gave me a sort of power. The power that as a woman, I too can be carefree and I too own some public space.”
