DTC Partners with JAGORI on the Safe Delhi Campaign
Buses are the most common mode of transport in Delhi. Different surveys have shown that a large number of molestation cases take place in buses and women feel unsafe travelling by buses. As many as 90 percent of the 18,000 respondents in a public perception survey carried out to collect data for the Delhi Human Development Report felt that public transport is unsafe for women in Delhi.
The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has shown tremendous foresight in addressing this issue proactively. JAGORI and DTC have partnered to make DTC buses more women friendly.
Under this partnership, JAGORI is holding workshops to sensitise bus drivers and conductors on issues of gender and sexual harassment. The training programme was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mrs. Sheila Dikshit on September 3, 2007
DTC has also initiated 24-hour helpline numbers — 52555 (toll free) and 9971755555 — for women passengers to register complaints of harassment in DTC buses
As part of the partnership JAGORI and DTC have jointly produced publicity material to address the issue of women’s safety. This material is being displayed in DTC buses and at DTC pass counters.
